Most same level falls are categorized in one of three ways: a slip and fall, a trip and fall, or a step and fall. We have already defined slips and trips. In a step and fall, the foot contacts a surface lower than expected, causing the person to fall forward, or, the foot lands on an uneven surface, turning the ankle and causing the person to fall forward and sideways. An elevated fall takes place when a person falls any distance, such as from a ladder, down stairs, off equipment, or from docks, trees, or roofs. Over 60% of elevated falls are from distances of less than 10 feet. In general, same level falls have a higher frequency, but are associated with lower damage. In contrast, elevated falls have a lower frequency, but are associated with higher damage.
